A couple hospitals are tacking the challenge, as there are many different rates than can apply, concurrent to insurance coverage by the patient, so I might guess these might be the standard charges without any insurance contracted rates in place...if you know anything about insurance, rates for each carrier for each item would take up a huge amount of room and would anyone go through a complete listing?  This would sound like a job for some active server web pages whereby everything could be filtered...which on another hand could prove to be very interesting if approached in this manner as patients could see by insurance company, both coverage and charges...hmmmm...now this might offer a real good source of information to be able to see both the carriers and charges all in one spot for all supplies and procedures for the particular hospital or clinic.....one big SQL data base query...BD

Hospital patients will soon be able to go online to shop around for procedures and services. The Michigan Health and Hospital Association, which represents nonprofit hospitals including the those in Holland and Zeeland, will post a price database of at least 50 of the most common tests and procedures on its Web site at www.mha.org. CT scans, X-rays and MRIs are some of the tests to be included on the list. Officials at both local hospitals said they are participating with the initiative. Terry Steele, Holland Hospital's vice president of finance and chief financial officer, said the hospital association plans to post the list within the next few months.

"I'm a little concerned whether the hospitals are posting their so-called charge masters, a fictitious list of prices used to discount PPO prices, rather than actual retail prices," he said.
