I try to cover quite a bit on the blog relative to personalized medicine and how it links and will connect to the clinical side of healthcare.  Navigenics has always had the focus on working with the physicians versus the commercial direct sale to the consumer.

MDVIP, Inc. is a privately-held firm, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. It is a national network of physicians, located in 25 States and the District of Columbia.  If you visit the Navigenics website, there’s more information on how to enroll and become involved in personalized medicine.  Below I have also listed some other resources available on the subject.

The service will be offered to 280 physicians.  As electronic medical records continue to evolve, markers and other related DNA testing information will also someday be included as “part of the medical record”.  It can be very valuable to have some of the initial information up front too as a time saver with developing treatment plans, based on perhaps the presence or non presence of some particular genes in one’s sequence, and take some of the guess work out of the prescribing portion with medications.  In the same light, lifestyles and preventive medicine stands a good chance too at being more accurate with knowledge up front instead of after the fact.

Genomics is still new and growing with so much still being a science, but as credible information develops through research that can lead to better lifestyles and health, well I think we can all agree we would like to have the decision making information now rather than later before perhaps going through some unnecessary trial and error processes.  BD

American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) and Navigenics, Inc. today announced a medical education program designed to improve physicians' understanding of genetic risk factors for disease, the current evidence about the use of genomic tools and technologies to determine risk, and promising practices for utilizing those tools to aid in disease prevention.

Through an unrestricted educational grant from Navigenics, ACPM is independently developing this continuing medical education (CME) course, titled Genetic Risk, Screening and Intervention, to address the growing use of genetic testing services and to imageexamine their evidence-based impact on the practice of medicine.

imageThe Genetic Counseling Foundation has been established that could offer both physicians and patients a bit more background and how the process is progressing and where genetic testing could be applicable as well and help with some of the confusion here.  In the family practice office, there is not a lot of time for research and study with the heavy flow patients a normal physicians sees in a day

BOCA RATON, Fla. & REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MDVIP, Inc., a leading national network of physicians dedicated to preventive and personalized healthcare, and Navigenics, Inc., a leading personal genomics testing company, today announced a first of its kind collaborative effort to integrate genomic-based preventive healthcare in physician offices. Through this initiative, Navigenics’ genomic testing service will be available to MDVIP affiliated physicians to help patients understand their genetic risk factors for disease and work with their doctors to develop individualized prevention plans.

Navigenics will provide MDVIP patients and their affiliated physicians with insight into their personal genetic predisposition for developing certain medical conditions where primary or secondary prevention could improve health outcomes. The Navigenics test will identify individuals’ genetic markers for developing such conditions as type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart attack, and celiac disease. Working with their personal MDVIP physician and Navigenics’ board-certified Genetic Counselors, individuals can chart and implement a personalized wellness course to help decrease their overall risk, delay disease onset or prevent it altogether.
