One more destination to go have knee surgery and the cost in the U.S. is about $45,000 compared with about $12,000 over there. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has it already listed as an option through a partnership. It appears that knees and hip replacements tend to dominate the arena around elective type surgeries. It certainly appears it is becoming a very competitive situation for orthopedic surgery procedures any more, every few weeks there’s one more announcement that comes out for an alternative outside the US. The city-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula is now touting its medical services, including joint-replacement surgery, to patients around the world.
WSJ’s Peter Landers spoke recently with Jason Yap, a doctor who heads international health-care marketing for Singapore. Right off the bat, Yap acknowledged, “The best place for patients to have health care is in their home country.” But, he said, many countries aren’t able to deliver care that’s timely, priced right and of high quality.
