This is the prediction of David Levy, author of the book “Love + sex with robots”.  Being that Massachusetts is ranked #1 in technology, does that mean they will arrive there first?  Five years is not that far away when you think about it.  His theory has had some real rippling effects throughout the scientific world and yes it could stand to really complicate ethics and relationship issues. One thing though, this might be really good news for the most connected/disconnected folks though as there’s no fear of rejection and hopefully the robots will have an “off” switch, unless….the programmers will it with a mind of it’s own, but in that case, you might as well have a human partner to haggle with and it might lack luster with sales.  Below are a couple scenarios that could exist.  image

"Certainly there will be some existing human-human relationships where one partner might say to the other partner: 'if you have sex with a robot I'm leaving you.  There will be others who say: 'when you go on your business trip please take your robot because I happen to worry about the red light district'."

I would guess that for those who are shy or have significant problems with humans, this could be some kind of an answer…yeah right…perhaps maybe something for the curious mind but to choose one over a human relationship…well once more here we go…electronically connected/ humanly disconnected…something that is already happening today…so there has to be some balance somewhere along the line so reality doesn’t end up taking a back seat and clouding real issues.  In the meantime until the next 5 years come to pass, you’ll just have to do your best with your human compadres.  Last month there was a story about a female robot that was to be available this month.  Check out the video from Japan here.  BD

Remember when you were a kid and you told your friends that you totally loved your new computer, and some little luddite looked at you and said, "So why don't you marry it?" There was that brief moment when you thought your Commodore 64 could, in fact, make a nice spouse. If not, move along. If so, David Levy told participants at a conference last week that we would all be having loving relationships with robots by 2050, not just trysts in Massachusetts. He predicts that we'll have robots as sex toys within five years and true, deep relationships later on. Some robots already kiss, some seem to hate, but Levy says we'll have emotional relationships based on conversation by mid-century. Until that time, remember your C64, your first true love. She / he remembers you, you selfish jerk.

Robots to be our lovers by 2050, not just in Massachussetts - Engadget
