For one, that's a lot of data sets to to migrate and change, from the coder's side of the world.  From the other side of things, we will have a learning curve, but I think the meltdown will take place before the year 2011 anyway.  Take a look at how the coding system compares with other countries, do we have a very complicated healthcare system?  BD

The federal government's proposed deadlines for implementing the ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure code sets and HIPAA 5010 transaction standards "will result in a major meltdown in the health care industry," according to Scott Serota, president and CEO of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association in Chicago.

The U.S. version of ICD-10 also is far more complex than the code sets used in other nations, according to the association. The U.S. version, for instance, has 68,000 diagnosis codes compared with 30,000 for Canada and 16,013 for Australia; and 87,000 procedure codes, compared with 18,000 for Canada and 6,055 for Australia, according to the association.

Blues: ICD-10, 5010 Dates = Meltdown

  1. I recently took an ICD-9-CM coding class. The professor mentioned the US does not use ICD-whatever as known in the rest of the world, hence the appended "-CM".My guess: The insurance industry, daily devising new and insidious ways to exclude, delay and deny; plus other profit-seeking pursuits (e.g. post-claim recissions) in order to excessively compensate executives, add to administrative costs, and perform similar shareholder-pleasing activities has largely brought the ICD-10-CM "mess" upon itself.

  2. Part of the ICD system too is how our government derives statistics too so we have those reports on how man cases of xxxx were reported this year. I agree, our whole system has become one complicated system that nobody likes when it comes to the business side of healthcare.
