Patient survived the surgery but never became conscious afterwards...did the delay lead to her death..BD
CALGARY -- The family of a Calgary woman who died of flesh-eating disease is demanding to know why it took a local hospital nearly 21 hours to perform surgery to stop the fast-acting infection.
Denise Malone, 62, died last week from necrotizing fasciitis after an ambulance rushed her to hospital with unexplained swelling and excruciating pain in her right leg.
Malone arrived at Foothills hospital Jan. 1 around 8 p.m. local time, but she wasn't wheeled into surgery until about 5 p.m. the next day - causing her daughters to question whether delays in Calgary's stressed medical system contributed to her death.
