San Diego ER rooms slammed....12 hour waits an average...BD
With emergency rooms around the county near saturation point, people are being urged to avoid hospitals unless they have a true medical emergency. That's the message from hospital leaders, who want county health officials to issue a public service alert.
This month has been especially busy so far, with waits that could exceed 12 hours. It's not just because winter is the season for influenza and respiratory infections, which normally bring feverish, coughing and wheezing patients to the hospital. It's also not just because more people than usual seem to be developing complications from their weak hearts or lungs, emergency room specialists said. And it's not just because there have been more post-holiday injuries from auto accidents and household falls. “It's all of these things, a whole winter mix,” said Don Stanziano, a spokesman for Scripps Health, whose Scripps Mercy hospitals in Hillcrest and Chula Vista have been slammed.
