Comparison to El Camino and the differences...Mix of patients with insurance is a big one along with El Camino using technology and automation....sometimes boards are noted also for being very dysfunctional too and would benefit from businessmen helping occupy some of the seats...but then there is the argument too that Boards don't run hospitals, management does...and you can look to see what type of management employed at a facility...fast forward thinking, or old time died in the wool non technology motivated...it helps to have a good leader of the ship as everyone follows in their direction....Palm Drive hospital has invested in the latest Robo Doctor technology as the picture shows...and they have 35 licensed beds...so it appears all efforts are pointed in some of the right directions for the small community hospital turn around..BD
Sebastopol, which lost $2.7 million in 2006 and has been reorganizing in Chapter 9 bankruptcy since April 2007, provides one portrait of what could happen when Marin General Hospital reverts to public control. Palm Drive became an independent health-care district in 2001 after voters approved $5.9 million in general obligation bonds to buy the hospital from Columbia Health Care and pay for seismic retrofitting and emergency room improvements.
But El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, which earned $36.9 million in 2006 and recently won voter approval for $148 million in general obligation bonds to help build a new hospital, provides quite a different picture. The district board there regained control of the hospital in 1996 after it had operated for four years as a private nonprofit.
Graham said there are several reasons for El Camino's success despite competition from Stanford Hospital, Kaiser Permanente's hospital in San Jose and clinics operated in the area by Sutter Health. "This hospital is in the center of Silicon Valley, has a favorable payer mix and the nearest hospital is about seven miles away," Graham said. "For decades, it has focused on clinical excellence and automation.
