He had a history of heart problems and had been admitted to the hospital earlier in the day after suffering chest pains. Carlin was known for his edgy, provocative stand-up material filled with drug references and his famous routine about seven words you can't say on television. The routine became the subject of a regulatory battle after a radio broadcast of the routine. The case ultimately reached the supreme court.
