This article states part of the reporting system will include information on the willingness of a doctor to use genetic testing, well first of all we need to help the doctors to bring this full circle with the integration into the clinical side of this, as I have spoken to many MDs and they are aware of Pharmacogenomics but the complete understanding of how to bring this in to the point of patient care is still lacking, especially since so much of genomics is still work in progress, but there are portions that can impact some decisions today and relative information will also be included in patient medical charts as well.  BD

In a previous post, I have listed a few resources here, both for patients and physicians on the basics.  Also, back a couple months ago with an interview with Dr. Patrice Milos of Helicos, we discussed the same issues, education and part of her job is in fact traveling to various universities and institutions and doing just that, bringing an education awareness and discussing how pharmacogenomics is going to change the world of medicine as we know it.  BD

Pharmacy benefit manager Medco Health Solutions, Inc. said last week it will team with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to study how people's genes influence the effectiveness of prescription drugs. Pharmacogenomics, often referred to as personalized medicine, could change how doctors prescribe medicine for all illnesses and conditions, said the Franklin Lakes-based company. The field is helping researchers to understand why a given drug may be less effective or have worse side effects in one person than another, according to the Mayo Clinic. The research partnership between Medco and the FDA lasts through August 2010.

Medco will report to the FDA on topics including prescription drug safety, doctors' willingness to use genetic testing in prescribing and the usefulness of those tests. Medco said pharmacogenomics could help lower costs and improve the quality of care by taking the guesswork out of prescribing. - Thomas Gaudio Study could change prescribing approach.
