An 8 year old MRI unit was being returned to the manufacturer.  The FDA does not track these incidents and there have been around 5 of them and they mostly go unreported.  One unit exploded in the middle of the night on it’s own.  The video below was from 2006 and most of the incidents have been related back to improper handling of hardware, maintenance, etc.  BD

A medical physicist in Alabama has noticed what could be a disturbing trend: exploding MRI magnets. Dr. Wlad Sobol of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, describes what may have caused the incidents and offers advice for avoiding potentially catastrophic incidents at medical facilities.

  1. Thanks for the link, Barbara.
I did not know that there was a risk of MRI scanners exploding. I don't think many radiologists know this either. This is not something that I have EVER heard from the MRI vendors.

  2. I had not heard of it at all either, so something to be aware of with nuclear medicine and the equipment used, caution at all times!
