We have a new device on the inhaler end of drug delivery and this one also says the mission is to “Tune in to Compliance”, which means we are going to see if you are taking your drugs when you are supposed to and how much. This device looks like the “little brother” alternative to the “big brother” device that has blue tooth and will send your information all over the place. If you watch the video at the link below, keep in mind the demo was made in the UK so don’t totally freak out when the programmer says “we can send this right to your insurance company”, something we all fear here in the US as data gets used against getting care with algorithmic risk assessments that are done.
The VenaHub Medical Device Hub Wirelessly Reports Health Data Compliance and the Blue Tooth Inhaler
This device, the Sensohaler looks like it’s all about giving the information to the user so they can see if they are compliant rather than reporting to “big brother” in the sky which I think is a lot better methodology. The device can also be very helpful with clinical trials too with ensuring patient compliance to get results and information. In a trial, you do want to be compliant and most are ok with this as the data is not be accumulated to cut your degree of care. BD
From the website:
“The technique is completely non-invasive, having no effect on the airflow or the aerosolisation performance of the inhaler and (if required) could be imperceptible to the user. A feasibility study using Sensohaler demonstrated the accuracy of the technology on a range of different devices and inhaler types. It proved with two different inhaler types that the flowrate accuracy is on par with that of a thermal mass flow meter.
Iain Simpson, who recently joined from Team Consulting to head up Sagentia’s growing Drug Delivery team, said: “Non compliance in inhaled drug delivery is a big issue - providing direct feedback to users will help reinforce correct usage and also assist clinicians in working with their patients to improve management of their disease”
Sensohaler uses advanced acoustic analysis to understand how an inhaler is functioning and how it is being used by the patient. It provides valuable feedback to the user, doctor or provider and consequently promotes correct use. It will increase compliance through positive user feedback, help doctors to understand the efficacy of the medication and help drug providers learn how their products perform early on in clinical trials.

It is nice that new technology always innovates instruments that helps people to maintain health :)
