Our history and comeback efforts
A big corporation which already owned a Hospital, had purchased LB Community Medical Center 18 months earlier, and had assured the community it did not intend to close the facility. Prior to the closure they had been gradually moving equipment and services from Long Beach to another hospital, in violation of its charitable trust obligations. Activists argued that a nonprofit chain could not come in and purchase a community hospital and replace its charitable mission with the mission of the larger hospital system, so after closure, the hospital re-opened after being closed for an extended amount of time,starting from scratch on almost everything.
