Last week I included an article about the potential technical insolvency of many of the hospitals in the US....ok so the hospital foots the bill and pays...add up a few, plus a lawsuit or so that may come along...bottom line, hospital goes out of business...push coming to shove, cart before the horse... what's the next move....not take care of the patient due to not being compensated? With the recent heparin stories we have already seen the consequences of "economic decisions"...and what was accomplished...patients died...so my question is what do we have here with these regulations...does Medicare think this is the overall solution....I can see potential legal battles going on here and in the meantime the patient may lie there and die....BD
Should “never events” really never happen? Eliminating some mishaps that should never happen is a laudable goal, but just isn’t possible 100% of the time, some inside the medical establishment say.
Last year, Medicare said it would stop paying to treat a bunch of hospital problems that included bed sores, certain catheter-associated infections and leaving objects inside surgery patients. Health insurers including Cigna and WellPoint have followed Medicare’s lead. Now, Medicare has proposed to cut payments for nine more items.
