This is the first I have heard of this service and the post office in Switzerland is now offering it, the first postal service to do do. US Post Office might want to be on alert. The service is also used by some large corporations already in the US. If one travels a lot this would save having to get home and get the mail or going to a post office box.

You do have control as far as who has your address as you decide who gets your Earth Class Mail address, so no hope for all the junk mail that comes in for “resident” yet and the trees keep coming down for junk advertising mail. There are quite a few options here too, have you email in paper format boxed up and sent to you later, or you can archive it for storage on line too.

Gee, one thought that went through my mind too being it is encrypted, is that a doctor’s office could get lab results this way if working with one that does not already have an HL7 connection like Quest and LabCorp. This service could go many ways even with a PHR with having selected physicians, labs, doctors or hospitals sending to the address and receiving in digital format. BD

PARIS — The Swiss national postal service has started redirecting some mail from the letter box to the inbox.

A program introduced by the Swiss Post in June allows subscribers to receive scans of their unopened envelopes by e-mail message and then to decide which they want opened and scanned in their entirety, to be read online.

Subscribers can also ask to have the contents archived, send unopened letters to another address or have them shredded and recycled.

The program uses technology provided by Earth Class Mail, a company based in Seattle that has tens of thousands of individual subscribers worldwide, mostly in Britain, the United States, Canada and Mexico. Clients in those countries have mail sent to one of more than two dozen designated addresses for processing.

Basic service for Swiss Post Box starts at €14, or $20, a month. In North America, clients pay between $10 and $60 a month for Earth Class Mail’s service, depending on how much mail they want scanned.

Earth Class Mail says that its users recycle 90 percent of their mail. By comparison, the U.S. Postal Service reported that 40 percent of the mail it processed was recycled.

He said operational employees did not have access to mail that had been opened and scanned and that the digital images were encrypted.
