Some of the duties will be outsourced, but under the control of a local office, and portions of this provision will need an act of Congress, so I might guess now’s the time, or after the election maybe to tackle this issue.
I would also like to see labels on every product stating the city, origin and country of where the product comes from, and not show a corporate office address when the product was really made in China for example. The transportation business does this all the time with what is called a “blind shipment”, they know where it came from and how it was moved from point A to point B, but the consumer only sees the headquarter address of the company, thus when recalls happen, it takes a while to find the lot numbers, track it down and get the word out to consumers. Hopefully something like this could be addressed as well, there’s more of this going on than one would believe and for branding a purse or a pair of shoes, it’s not that bad as we don’t consume those, but drugs and food products should all have the manufacturing location on the products. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration will establish its first office in China before the end of the year as part of a broader plan to assure the safety of imports from the developing world.
FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach on Thursday laid out a plan to place more than 60 food and drug regulators worldwide over the next year, with a particular focus on India, Latin America and the Middle East.
Leavitt and von Eschenbach acknowledged that several dozen additional staffers would not be able to visit the thousands of plants across the globe that fall under FDA's responsibility. They said the U.S. government would need to outsource some inspections to foreign governments and companies, who would verify that plants meet U.S. standards.
Officials said the FDA does not have the authority to accredit third-party inspectors and would have to seek Congress' approval to do so.
