This is a very sad story, patient 80 years old, and the doctor a well respected and caring physician, and so far nobody knows why this happened in the exam room. The patient then shot himself after the fact, as the one doctor mentioned, metal detectors at the office some day? BD
A shocking crime has left a Las Vegas doctor dead. It happened Monday morning at the doctor's office on west Charleston near Rancho. Police say 80-year-old Eliseo Santos was in one of the exam rooms of Doctor Edna Makabenta when he pulled out a gun and shot her.
He then turned the gun on himself.
When police arrived they found Doctor Makabenta dead and Santos barely alive. He died a few minutes later at UMC.
The murder-suicide is particularly shocking to the medical community who say Doctor Makabenta was well respected and caring. News of the crime traveled fast in doctors offices across the valley.
Knowing the victim was a doctor known for her gentle and kind manner makes the violence that much harder to understand, "Kind, gentle, the antithesis of what you think would set a patient off. And so I'm sitting here wondering to myself, is this open season on doctors."
Dr. Goldsmith says his clinic is already put in extra safeguards to keep employees safe at night but now he wonders if things are escalating to the point where even metal detectors will be necessary in clinics.
