Little Clinics are retail care clinics found in Kroger's, Publix Warehouse stores and a few other locations. They use an electronic medical records system from eClinical Works for all patients. A little over a year ago I spoke with a couple of their company representatives and in that conversation we mostly focused on use of their automated desktop software in hospitals. Boston Software Systems – Workflow Scripting Automation for Hospitals
This is one place where in 20 of the clinics so far a patient will not be handed the clipboard that we all love to hate. BD
Press Release:
BOSTON – April 20, 2010 - Boston Software Systems™ today named Mat Waites, CIO at The Little Clinic of Brentwood, TN, the winner of Boston Software Systems’ Fourth Annual User Excellence Award. This honor recognizes Waites for his successful and innovative use of Boston WorkStation to automate the registration process and enable patient registration kiosks to interface with the eClinicalWorks EMR. As a result, The Little Clinic has been able to save the staff hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars, allowing for more focus on patient care.
The Little Clinic is a healthcare services company that operates and manages walk-in clinics placed inside retail locations. Open seven days a week, the clinics focus on treating minor illnesses by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and offers health and wellness services to customers at an affordable fee.
Waites and his team developed The Little Clinic’s patient registration kiosk and needed to interface the patient demographic data into the eClinicalWorks EMR. Boston WorkStation consistently and automatically pulls the registration data from the kiosk database and into the EMR, reducing the amount of administrative work for the staff person on duty. Boston WorkStation can also identify repeat patients and alerts the clinician, to further expedite the care process. Currently, Boston WorkStation services 20 out of the more than 100 clinics. Waites plans to expand the use of automation to more facilities this year.
“Prior to using the kiosk, the patient was handed the old clipboard and asked to fill out a detailed paper form, which the clinician then had to transfer to the EMR system,” said Waites. “The clinician also had to document the patient queue by hand. As such, the clinician was playing the role of registrar, billing clerk, as well as diagnostician. Automating the registration and data transfer process saves us about one hour per day per clinic. Given that the clinics are open up to 72 hours per week, this easily translates to a savings of hundreds of hours and about $12,000 per month. We plan to expand Boston WorkStation into more clinics, which will afford us further savings.”
“The Little Clinic is an excellent example of Boston WorkStation’s versatility in helping organizations accomplish a variety of critical workflow automation tasks,” said Steve Cohen, executive vice president of Boston Software Systems. “Given the results of the healthcare reform, and potentially 32 million more people seeking healthcare, there is tremendous demand for services of this kind. Automating critical workflow will not only benefit The Little Clinic, it also gives its clinicians more time with patients. We are proud of the ways our customers are using Boston WorkStation and how quickly their investment pays for itself.”
“I envision using Boston WorkStation for other tasks, particularly the many manual and repetitive tasks associated with Account Receivables,” added Waites. “I look forward to expanding our use of automation at our clinics.”
