The Food and Drug Administration granted marketing approval Wednesday to Teva Pharmaceutical Industries for a generic version of Flomax, a drug used to treat enlarged prostate.
Flomax is prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition characterized by an increase in the size of the prostrate in middle-aged and elderly men that causes slow or blocked urine flow.
Teva is launching its generic product Wednesday.
The branded product generates annual sales of approximately $2 billion for Boehringer Ingelheim, of Ingelheim, Germany, in the United States.
