This is always one of my top discussions for discussion as frankly medical devices that report data have been highly overlooked in the area of meaningful use, maybe not that it has not been addressed, but maybe due to the fact it is changing and evolving so quickly.  When you stop and think about it, we have a hard time with managing a cell phone today with just phone calls and text messages, so add on some additional capabilities, what’s going to happen?

Here’s a post with a summary of some of the devices if you want to look, and check out the blue tooth inhaler, pretty exotic but it is there.

Keep in mind that drug delivery methods are changing as well, perhaps there’s a reason here as devices can create compliance audit trails.

The Future of Drug Delivery Lies with Technology – Panel of Experts From Cambridge Consultants

This will be interesting to see how delivery and implementation comes out.  Many times we have VC funded companies producing devices that need sales quickly and thus the product implementation is not adequate and irritates people and makes it cumbersome to use, thus nobody ends up with using the product.

We also need to ensure security and privacy as not all devices and their sites make it easy to determine where the information goes and who has access as companies buy and sell some of this information for profit too.  The link below explains this and how hard it has been for some consumers to get old and erroneous information removed and sometimes that has been held against them and precludes getting insurance for either pre-existing conditions or not reporting a minor problem from over 15-20 years ago, and in truth it could be a coding situation and I predict we will see a lot of that from old claim information on file as more information is aggregated so be ready.

Devices with biometric monitoring are also becoming an active element with behavioral underwriting with insurance carriers as well.  Pay close attention to this area and ask a lot of question about your information for privacy purposes.

I truly believe that all would much more active participants if we didn’t have to worry about healthcare being used against us for care for the sake of profit producing data, but with the current system that will not go away.  BD
