Ostreid herpes viruses is a new strain of the diseases which affects everything from cows to humans and now oysters and other shellfish. Many of the breeding grounds of the Pacific Oysters have already been under attack and some destroyed. As waters continue to warn, the herpes virus continues to spread.
Apparently according to this article the virus can wipe out 80 percent of the oysters within a bed in a week and the only way the virus can be discovered is through lab tests. You can’t get human herpes from eating an oyster so you are safe there in case that thought raced through your mind. In California a another type of herpes virus has been detected but not as viral. In July lab testing of farmed oysters detected the first known United Kingdom cases of herpes in the shellfish. The virus has already killed between 20 to 100 percent of breeding Pacific oysters in some French beds in 2008, 2009, and 2010, according to the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer).
The reason for oyster herpes's emergence in Pacific oysters off England remains a mystery, though global warming may have played a part, experts speculate.
