Many people don’t think of 3M being in healthcare, when in fact they really are and have a pretty large division that covers everything from dental to veterinary and imageanimal care.  Years ago when I was in the logistics area, I did a ton of business with their Dental division in Irvine, California.

You can visit their website here and see what interests and developments the company has related to healthcare.

When looking at the Cogent technology what comes to mind for me in healthcare is secure single sign on potential with medical records and other healthcare technologies.  You can read at the link below how one hospital is already using this technology from another company.

From the website:

“Cogent is a multinational Tier 1 Internet service provider consistently ranked as one of the top five networks in the world. Our primary service offering consists of Internet access and data transport, offered over our award-winning fiber optic, IP data-only network, along with colocation in any of our 40 Internet Data Centers. We service two customer segments: “Corporate” (small businesses to Fortune 100 companies) and “NetCentric” (access providers and content providers whose businesses rely primarily on Internet access).

3M Co., which makes products ranging from Post-Its to respirators, computer arms, and films for LCD TV screens, said Monday it has agreed to acquire Cogent Inc. in a deal worth about $943 million.
Cogent, based in Pasadena, California, develops automated systems that read finger and palm prints. The company's board of directors already has agreed to the deal and is recommending that shareholders accept it.
