Neidig met with the public and donors on May 23 to explain that it was closing because the foundation felt that it had accomplished its goal. Formed by a group of Kanzius' dedicated friends, it has been the project's primary source of funding for the last five years.</p> <p>Researchers are preparing an application to the FDA as early as August in order to show the evidence they have compiled and ask for approval to begin testing it on humans. The FDA is required by law to meet with any applicant within 90 days and to make a decision within an additional 75 days.</p> <p><strong>"They aren't going to stop things because there are so many great pieces of data," said Neidig. Meaningful Use And Patient Portals–Advertising and Data Selling With 3rd Party Apps Software Impact Consumer Engagement and Furthermore Makes It More Confusing to the Patient-Non Data Selling Portal Services are Winning..

<p>Talk about confusing the patient and at the same time hammering on Doctors and Hospitals to get 5% of the patients to access their medical records on a portal that contains advertisements and/or endorsements of data selling 3rd parties can be an issue, so “what the heck is in that portal”…</p> <p>We all know advertising along with the current “data selling epidemic” taking place offers high levels of disruption.  I see it all the time with all these new “innovation” apps and very few offer anything new and most are somewhat of a copy cat, providing the same function of something that’s already out there, but new screens, and few little buzzes from where you click and navigate makes this a whole new brand <img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="97" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PiRYIbrouhc/UkSKeYAiPtI/AAAAAAABH8M/d6lAOf1s7Xc/image%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" title="image" width="114" />of app to fall all over.  Consumers can’t identify this but the developers and Query Masters can and feed on it and we get this glut of apps that few use.  I’m probably pretty vocal that way as I used to code and I used to sell too so I’m a weird hybrid out here in the medical blogging world and that’ why you see these types of post over here and nowhere else:)</p> <p>You do have to look at the impact of data selling out there as it is alive and well and does disrupt and makes money for corporations, like insurers today.  If you have not ever <a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/07/health-insurance-business-under-radar.html">looked at some of the insurer subsidiaries do it, breathtaking</a> as well as all the businesses they are in.  I try to point all of this out as best I can following not only the money but the data as well.  So as a patient out there and there’s more than just me talking about it when a patient is looking at a portal and they see promotions for mobile apps that are part of the quantified self move on the portal advertises and promoted, and the patient has read a little about the data selling, do you think one might ask “what’s that doing on the portal”..could be.   I thought this video was interesting as it shows some visual ideas without promoting any particular vendor as to where we are headed with some of this. </p> <p><iframe style="height: 286px; width: 467px" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/C_l3FxRmtnM" frameborder="0" width="420" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <p>This adds to the confusion of doctors trying to get patients to participate in the basic requirements of meaningful use in just accessing their medical records.  </p> <p><strong>You see wellness programs promoted and we all should know by now that insurers own a bunch of them and we get back to mining for data for sale again here as the marketing for predictive behavioral health is duping you in a bit.</strong>  Sure there’s value in identifying patterns and the human brain can do that too and the capabilities are being a bit oversold to the point to where “everyone needs to have their behavior fixed” so even the healthy people who enter such programs, no appreciation for where they are, but let’s fix them too with this portal.  We have to get them to enter the data to fix them:)  It came to heads with Penn State wanting to fine all users who did not participate $100 a month..pretty strong language there and people revolted and for a good reason as again everyone has been judged and needs to be “fixed” whether they need it or not.</p> <h5><strong><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/09/wellness-questionnaires-coming-under.html">Wellness Questionnaires Coming Under Scrutiny, Federal Lawmaker Wants Rules–Many Wellness Programs Are Subsidiaries of Health Insurance Companies and Most Mine Data For Sale</a></strong></h5> <p> I have appreciation for the work at the ONC and I’m sure they are very aware of this as well and it probably gives them fits at times as well when keeping on track with meaningful use parameters to be met.  Again we come back to this data selling disruption and epidemic out there interrupting and intersecting with the functions of getting to the value of the “clinical data”.  It’s tough when you have this data selling side show going on at the same time and the search for real “value” needs to be at the top of the list.  </p> <p>The other day there was an article about the 10 biggest mobile health investments and most of them appeared to have a “data selling” business model.  You can read it if like but I made a case about one of the start ups and their poor marketing and telling me a blogger “how poor they are” and that I really need to promote them so they can more data to sell.  I’m sure they didn’t expect the rant of the duck but again I have two focuses and look at both sides.  A VC sees an almost immediate revenue stream from selling data = funded?  I know these are all designed to hopefully benefit a consumer but remember number one benefit is to get money to the start up and of course with data selling, it becomes “free” for the consumer or almost “free”.  </p> <h5><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/09/10-biggest-mobile-health-investments.html">10 Biggest Mobile Health Investments This Year Appear to Have Business Plans With Profits Contingent on Selling Data for Profit And VCs Seem To Like Funding Models As Such, Look At The Numbers…</a></h5> <p><strong>We just had the new HIPAA rules come out too and already there’s a clash with technology with abiding by the rules.  It appears there’s no where a patient can really decide that a certain record can be withheld from an insurer as nobody has written the code in medical records to do that, plus if not paid by cash, the insurer gets the claim</strong> and will be out there hunting for the medical record documentation at some point.  Insurers love analytics and data and are hiring Quants in groves to do more with every stick of data they can buy or have in house to add more profits to the bottom line.  How ethics come in here…well that gets real gray and we kind of circle back around to the data selling epidemic.  Here’s what’s already happening when patients want a particular record to be private, “the little drawer of paper charts”..and nice we have doctors that work with us as our partners to do this and it’s not often but when needed there’s a probably a good reason other than I’m just going to say no.  That’s where we get back to the doctor-patient relationship that needs to remain strong. </p> <p><strong><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/09/digital-doctors-little-drawer-of-paper.html">Digital Doctors” Little Drawer of Paper Charts” Stands to Grow In Size Due to New HIPAA Laws And Insurer Context, Gov Can’t or Won’t Model?</a></strong></p> <p>Everyone seems to be jealous and critical of Epic but you know what, they basically are the Apple, Microsoft or what you want to call them in the medical record business and I feel a lot of this goes back to their CEO, Judy Faulkner, who wrote code and the initial software  and keeps the development largely<img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="146" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KXPHCaPBnLk/UkSKeyfFiYI/AAAAAAABH8U/Q6cZMUYac8U/image%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" title="image" width="319" /> in house, and there’s still a lot of Visual Basic in the software, still pretty solid.  Do you see that with many of the other medical record companies, very few(e-MDs is one)  and most are the big conglomerates like Allscripts who blew it a couple of years ago not telling shareholders the truth about all the code needed to blend two different software program…CEOs not involved in the heart of the software blow it and do things like that. </p> <p>Epic provides “MyChart” as their personal health records which is tethered to the medical records and allows patient interaction and it’s been around for a while and it is any wonder that they have 22% of the ambulatory market out there with creating a portal that works well and doesn’t have stuff up there promoting data sellers on the portal.  Again there’s a lot to be said to having a “controlled environment” with software development.  <a href="http://www.epic.com//software-phr.php#planlink">A little lesser known is the LUCY Freestanding PHR from Epic</a>.  This is for patients who want to take their data form MyChart and other entities and keep their own untethered PHR.  You could say it is similar in nature to HealthVault in a way but you need have a “MyChart” PHR to use it as that’s where the population of the data starts.  </p> <p><em><strong>“Lucy is free of the two primary obstacles to patient PHR adoption:</strong></em></p> <ol> <li><em><strong>There are no advertisements on Lucy. </strong></em></li> <li><strong><em>Epic will not sell patient data for secondary uses.</em> “</strong></li> </ol> <p>You can see on websites like the <a href="http://www.uwhealth.org/patient-guides/medical-records-billing/uw-health-mychart/25766">University of Wisconsin</a> where information is made available to members/patients as an example.  Now there are efforts to extend the timing for meaningful use and this issue with getting 5% of the patients to view and download their medical records is running interference for the data sellers..making it more difficult for doctors so when you see the Epic solutions, and the two reasons they list, it’s like a no brainer to figure out what’s going on:)  They don’t have those 3rd party elements there confusing consumers.  So complain about Epic all you want but they are not selling your data nor endorsing those that do.  </p> <p>The data selling epidemic is exploding and getting<img align="right" src="https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRp9TBlvWqtr16ku9oa-uGY_yLITLV9hYmtozmPi5XdbJ5RW7Sm" style="float: right; Competition For the Healthcare Heats Up and Intel Introduces Quark Chip For Mobile Devices And Continues With Software Acquisitions, Exploring the Design & Models of Data Consumption and Sales..

<p>Well not to be outdone by others in the chip business Intel is working to get their new low powered chip out there as well.  The chip business has really evolved and is moving fast, so fast that factories open up and close about at the same speed.  There’s a reason for this of course and it has to do with<img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="132" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-cLkezPrV1e4/UjSnttQdd_I/AAAAAAABHvc/3JEek9S6Mhs/image%25255B7%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" title="image" width="197" /> the “tooling” required to manufacture chips.  Just this week Intel announced closing their factory in <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/index.ssf/2013/09/intel_will_close_massachusetts.html">Massachusetts and 700 jobs will be gone.</a>  This was a factory Intel bought years ago and now I am guessing the ability to retool and maintain a profit is disappearing.  It also affects other businesses as indicated in this <a href="http://bostonherald.com/business/technology/technology_news/2013/09/intel_layoffs_to_hurt_hudson">article such as restaurants,</a> and other facilities that hosted Intel events, etc.  It all rolls around.  </p> <p>The company is going to try to sell the facility, but this raises the question, will there be any buyers?  Might and might not.  In Hillsboro Intel began work last fall on a second facility in Hillsboro Oregon, in Oregon to where there has been a bit activity there with building a new plant.  That is also not without issues as it has been found that one <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/hillsboro/index.ssf/2013/09/intel_has_been_emitting_fluori.html">facility has been emitting fluoride since 1978</a> with an older factory and they need to upgrade to meet emissions standards.  Folks in New Mexico got wind of it and are asking questions there as well</p> <p>It is amazing on how much software today is going on the chip, a lot more than just a few years ago and you may not give this much thought but with all the devices out there just think of the software loaded in the chip to make the device work.  We have come a long way since the big introduction of 64 bit computing which it was not too long ago that was big news.  I used to do some contracted training for Intel about that time so I remember it pretty well.  All were going to move over to 64 bit software and 32 bit was going to be left in the dust, well it didn’t quite work that way and we are still transitioning..and Apple just announced putting a 64 bit chip in their iPhone.  </p> <p>Israel is and has been the real brain center for a lot of the technology for Intel and is still very much a big part of where their chip technologies come from.  Now on the agenda is the Quark processor to compete with ARM.<img align="right" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/TUJ0yWPpx2I/AAAAAAAApuU/D1wltpjNjKU/image_thumb%5B2%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="float: right; display: inline" />  I remember a ways back when ARM first came to cell phones, it was a big improvement for sure.  In addition the company also keeps Wall Street going with their Xeon processors that run the exchanges and software in New Jersey, where the actual servers are located, not in New York. Insurers also collect other data to query and run together like buying up your Visa and MasterCard records…</p> <h5><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/03/insurance-companies-are-buying-up.html">Insurance Companies Are Buying Up Consumer Spending Data-Time is Here to License and Tax the Data Sellers-As Insurers Sell Tons of Data, Gets Flawed Data When Data Buyers Uses Out of Context Too</a></h5> <p>I always find it interesting too when the over hyped “quantified self” movement is mentioned.  Sure wearables will offer great information as the risk of losing more privacy for sure but let’s into account how an average consumer is going to use and digest all of this.  A lot of it, people try and use it for a while and then get bored and it gets shoved in a drawer, I hear that from folks with many of the devices, fun for a while, but I’m bored now and it take too much of my time.  Sure those will argue that it’s on auto pilot to create the data, but you still need human interest to want to look at it as well as the desire.  I like technology too but I get bored like anyone else and usually have something else tugging at me today that distracts me to where I may not have time anymore to want to focus on the data..real life. </p> <p>I’m a female and no matter how they make these things look, I still like a nice gold necklace that looks a a hell of a lot better than some of what I see, but that’s me.  I am reading there though too that jewelry is the next frontier as the chips get smaller.  Of course the hype from the designers “has” to be there, that’s what they do.  I kind of laughed a little bit <a href="http://www.intelfreepress.com/news/intel-hires-nike-fuelband-design-engineer-oakley-designer/6740">at this one statement here</a> (below) and again it’s because I am a privacy advocate and see the billions made selling data on the back side, like the value is going to be for dollars in companies selling and promoting devices, watches and so forth, the other side:)</p> <p><em>“It’s going to be a while before most people are comfortable and see the value in using them, and the actual technology gets refined enough,” he said.”</em></p> <p>Value seems to be a word I use quite frequently today along with context as they play major roles and we get duped too on what we should consider <img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="161" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-h9CfxdrR--0/UjSnuBu5tNI/AAAAAAABHvk/sTX-Ev77ovA/image%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" title="image" width="271" />value so it get pretty gray out there with steroid marketing too.  How many stock brokers do you see walking around wearing the devices…be interesting to observe something like that I think.  To make a point on lower powered processors, this was interesting to see a demonstration on <a href="http://www.geek.com/chips/intel-powers-a-processor-using-a-glass-of-wine-at-idf-2013-1570756/">how a glass of wine could offer enough power to harness some processing speed</a>..and no I don’t this is a real life scenario we watch for yet as I don’t see us hanging a glass of wine around our wrists anytime soon:)</p> <p>Do you think Nuance is the only one in the business of natural language recognition..not so but they do have the market but <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/13/intel-has-acquired-natural-language-processing-startup-indisys-price-north-of-26m/">Intel bought a company called Indisys from Spain</a> that’s in that business too for $26 million.  </p> <p><a href="http://www.valuewalk.com/2013/07/intel-corporation-intc-buys-omek/">Intel also bought another company recently named Omek,</a> in Israel that is in the 3D gesture recognition business for $40 million.  Ok so are we looking at competition for Kinect here in putting gesture recognition on wearables next?  I might think the DOD and Homeland Security might perk up on this technology, you think? </p> <p><em>“Omek’s technology supports both close-range and long-range body tracking, recognizing gestures from as close as 10 cm right up to full body tracking. Earlier this year, Intel Corporation (</em><a href="http://www.valuewalk.com/stock-data/?stock_symbol=NASDAQ:INTC"><em>NASDAQ:INTC</em></a><em>) said it was working on a new Kinect-like interface for PCs that will recognize users and respond to them. To do this, it is building a small peripheral that can be attached to current-generation computers to add voice, gesture, and face recognition. Intel’s acquisition of Omek reaffirms its commitment to perceptual computing, which could help it take on Leap Motion in the battle for widespread adoption.”</em></p> <p><iframe height="285" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ZrcZct3ol3c?rel=0" frameborder="0" width="420" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <p>So again it’s interesting to see all of the technologies out there but it all comes back to the chip being the brain of course and Intel seems to be buying up technologies that will grow with their chips as well.  <strong>So again in summary all this technology takes money and to get it out to the consumers at an affordable price…well data selling revenues come right in there to the ecosystem with plenty of buyers wanting that data, again even if their segmentation strategies for profit are not yet defined, grab it while it’s hot seems to be what’s happening</strong>.  You would almost have to be living under a rock not to want to look at some of the money structures that go along with this.  </p> <p>I like both technology and privacy so the intertwinings are something I try to follow as it’s just my mind works:)  When you look at how fast the technology is moving versus the other side as far as knowledge of all of this we have some big gaps out there for sure <a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2012/11/big-dataanalytics-if-used-out-of.html">and the one thing we all fear of course with all of this is take taken out of context and used against us</a>, NSA news kind of confirms a lot of that.  There’s a good video in the footer here, the first one that discusses “context”, and well worth a watch as it might make you think about things as a big picture as we watch all the studies, devices, and technology that rolls in front of us every day.  I think is also important to be aware of the software, tools and technology that facilitates some of this and how it all works.  It’s a wild and wooly world out there today.  BD</p>

Walgreens Announces Healthspek An API Launch Partner and New Personal Health Record for the IPad They Produced, I’ll Pass and Remaining “Untethered”

ONC New Health IT Video for Consumers–Very Well Done But Where’s Sebelius, Benjamin and Other Executives With the Role Models We Need? What Do They Do for a PHR? Inquiring Minds Want to Know…

Microsoft Back in the Tablet Business With Their Own “Surface” Units Coming Soon

HP Buys Autonomy Machine Learning Software Technology for $11 Billion–More Debt and A Stake in Health IT

One More Reason for Slow EHR Adoption Cited–Software Being Designed To Meet Bureaucratic Standards Rather Than Needs of Doctors and Patients

border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="image" width="240" /></a>and attention is being paid to the user experience here.  You know I think I can agree with that because that’s about all we hear in the news today about medical record systems is the aggregation for compliance and the quest to save money and there has not been much said in the area of the user experience.  We certainly know that PHRs for patients are not catching on very quick, with the exception of closed systems like Kaiser who has maintained their original concept.  </p> <p>I also agree due to the fact that scribes are growing at a rapid rate that there must be something to this:) <u> It’s a real irony when you want to bring doctors into the world of Health IT but the scribes which were supposed to be temporary jobs continue to thrive as full time assistants</u>.  I can only say for doctors who are on staff at more than one hospital with each one using different systems it must be a real joy at times, and keep in mind that upgrades and changes take place frequently with the software too, along with new rules and regulations from the hospitals.  As you can see in the recent post below, one doctor thinks scribes are so great that nurses should<img align="right" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/TILmvQrXz2I/AAAAAAAAhII/HSNgCfBeR4g/image_thumb%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" /> have them too.</p> <h4><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2011/04/scribes-still-continue-to-grow-in.html"><font size="2">Scribes Still Continue to Grow in Hospitals–One Doctor Stated He Could See the Trend Expanding To Help Nurses Too</font></a></h4> <p>The EHR systems today are much more complicated and intense than they were just 5 years ago and a lot of this is a good thing with new reporting and so on but let’s face it the screens need to be easy enough to use to enter and find information.  </p> <p><strong>On the PHR side I still can’t get a peep out of the ONC, the Surgeon General or anyone in government talking about their personal experience with a PHR and this is the “social age” to where you would think if they want consumers to jump in here that they would consider being role models,</strong> but most of the time <u>when I dig down into this topic I find a great majority of those who tell us we should be using a PHR, don’t bother themselves so we have a lot of the kettle calling the pot black </u>when it comes to PHRs, in other words “Magpie Healthcare” that continues to thrive.  </p> <p><strong><em>Needless to say electronic records are here to stay, in what and shape and form along with price is always up for discussion <grin>.</em></strong></p> <p><u>It’s a bear writing an EMR and getting it right too and I don’t think today we have the one on one relationship with the developers and the doctors that used to exist too,</u> as we are so busy trying to figure out what to do with all the other data in other areas of our lives.  This is an area that I feel is important not to miss, just based on what I did a few years ago as I thought I had a really neat new update and the doctors told me it sucked, so back to the drawing board to see what could be salvaged and usually work in some new requests from the doctors as there was always constant feed back and I liked that.  Sure I had to get over myself on many occasions and was a bit disappointed as when things didn’t work it meant a whole lot more time on the keyboard but that’s the way the business works with a partnership between both and again I just don’t think we see that as much today.</p> <p><strong>The article goes on to further say that the distance we are seeing today with patients/doctors with the software is further than it’s ever been.</strong>  <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-LxxE98GqKrU/TfHMcsBrWTI/AAAAAAAAzGw/43hMipQYico/s1600-h/image%25255B7%25255D.png"><img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="189" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0tjZiKh4Xoc/TfHMc9eHFpI/AAAAAAAAzG0/T9hY3NM1zJY/image_thumb%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none;
