Last week, the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs announced enhancements to software that will allow the agencies to share information on clinical events, medical procedures and problems experienced by patients who receive care from both agencies, Healthcare IT News reports (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 12/28/07).
The software improvements on the agencies' Bidirectional Health Information Exchange are the third enhancement of 2007. Earlier upgrades let health care providers at DOD and VA share records on:
- Chemistry/hematology;
- In-theater medical treatment;
- Microbiology;
- Patient allergies;
- Pharmacy; and
- Radiology (Buxbaum, Government Health IT, 12/28/07).
