Toviaz, a German drug to be distributed by Pfizer Inc., received FDA approval Friday for treating the condition known as  overactive bladder. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug manufactured by Schwarz Pharma for patients who experience frequent, uncontrollable urination.

Studies showed that Toviaz reduced the incidence of such accidents. Pfizer said the condition affects up to one in six Americans and is related to involuntary contractions of the bladder. Other treatments on the market include Allergan's pill Sanctura and Watson Pharmaceutical's Oxytrol. Toviaz will be available in the first half of 2009.
