This is big news for hospitals and enterprise businesses in the name of security and IT administration. V-pro technology has been around for desktops and now is making it’s move in to the portable and wireless world.  IT managers have a lot more flexibility and the support functions are much better, such as remotely wake up a PC when outside of the LAN.  For more information on V-Pro you can read here.

There’s also a story on how V-Pro is installed and in use at a hospital here.  The diagnostic processes can even tell a remote administrator if the hard drive is due to fail and the PC will remove itself off the network if viral activity is detected.  BD

In terms of new management abilities, Intel is updating the capabilities of vPro with Centrino 2. vPro is a set of management, virtualization and  security technologies that Intel builds into the silicon itself and allows IT managers to remotely monitor a fleet of corporate clients. In this version of Intel vPro, the chip maker is giving IT managers the ability to wirelessly wake a notebook from sleep state even if the laptop is outside the corporate LAN. This allows the administrator to remotely patch or update the PC image and then turn the laptop back off or return to sleep mode. However, the laptop must be is plugged into an AC power outlet to do this.
