Even though he was not able to attend personally, modern technology of video conferencing made it possible for the Senator to continue his efforts and participation. As fuel prices continue to rise, along with just general state of the economy, video conferencing is finally coming of age.
Many companies offer this service, including Microsoft and I myself have participated in a demonstration of their Round Table technology. It is pretty fascinating with the folks in the room to watch how the camera immediately shifts to the one speaking, and remote users are connected via web cams and the same takes place with the speaker showing on the large screen. Not a bad deal for $3000.00. There are other companies that offer similar services such as Cisco, HP, but those have been known to cost a bit more. General Electric is one large user of Microsoft’s Unified Communication Service.
For us at home, there’s always Skype too for family and other video conferences, I use it all the time for both video and voice communications, particularly with the UK.
Nice to see technology enabling Senator Kennedy to be able to actively pursue overhauling our healthcare system, even after all he has been through health wise. Hats off and we need and appreciate his efforts now more than ever. BD
Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) on Thursday held a videoconference with Democratic committee members to discuss a strategy to pass legislation next year that would overhaul the U.S. health care system, CongressDaily reports. It was the first time since Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer that he met with all the committee members at once (Edney, CongressDaily, 9/18). The videoconference was "all part of a concerted effort by [Kennedy's] colleagues, family and staff to reinforce the impression that despite his illness, Kennedy is still in charge and his legislative agenda remains on track," CQ Today reports (Armstrong, CQ Today, 9/18).
