Especially at night it appears that we have a radiologist shortage in the U.S, although some might argue the point.

BANGALORE:  One of the biggest outsourced markets in the world.  They do more than just the US, it’s global and images consist of MRIs, X-Rays, CT Scans and more.  One of the main concerns though lies in the area of mistakes, who’s going to be liable?  Not that anyone on imagepurpose by any means would make a mistake, but you have the same issues as you do when done locally, a tired and over worked radiologist, that can happen anywhere, but with the distance, you do not have an opportunity for an in person discussion other than using a web cam, but that’s as close as you might get to being there.

The particular group discussed in this article has 118-members on the team in and they service 70 hospitals in the U.S., and 10 hospitals in Singapore and more.  If it’s an emergency results can come back as quickly as 10 minutes, with normal being around 45-60 minutes.

Nighthawk Radiology Holdings Inc. is another U.S. based teleradiology company whose physicians are located in the U.S., Australia and Switzerland.  As a patient, you may not even be aware that your images are not being read locally, but in an emergency and when you need immediate care, this can be a lifesaver too.  BD

BANGALORE (Reuters) - On a computer monitor in his office in the high-tech hub of Bangalore, Indian radiologist Arjun Kalyanpur examines a scan of the skull of a six-year-old boy who fell off his bicycle.  A few minutes later, thousands of miles away, doctors at a hospital in Philadelphia prepare the boy for surgery after receiving an urgent email from Kalyanpur diagnosing a subdural hemorrhage in the child's brain. It's the middle of the night in the United States, but it's daytime in Bangalore and Kalyanpur and his team of 35 radiologists are reading hundreds of scans sent by hospitals across the United States during the night shift.

Teleradiology Solutions has a sales office in Connecticut and radiologists in China, Netherlands and U.S. who backfill when the India operation is closed.
