Great effort on the members of Congress to “ask”, but the end result is what counts. R and D with major pharmaceutical companies is presently in the business of moving overseas to India and China, as well as some clinical trials, so the impact of the request from the members of Congress may or may not prove to enlighten any potential restructuring here in the US.
Every major pharmaceutical company today is outsourcing to some degree and it doesn’t appear to be any slow down in these efforts as it is more expensive today to bring new drugs to market. BD
Two members of Congress wrote to Pfizer CEO Jeff Kindler yesterday, asking him not to replace Connecticut-based contractors with foreign workers.
In yesterday’s letter, Senator Chris Dodd and Rep. Joe Courtney, both of Connecticut, asked the company to provide more details about the changes, which The Day says are tied to a new policy called “Procedure 117.”
“In our view, any reorganization that would result in the loss of jobs for local workers would be troubling, and we would urge you in the strongest terms to reconsider any such action,” Dodd and Courtney wrote.
The open letter came just hours after the Connecticut newspaper The Day reported that the company has been training foreign workers “in anticipation of transferring much of its information-technology work from local contractors to outside contracting firms.”
