Maryland hospitals continue to grapple with a shortage of health care professionals to fill jobs, according to a study released Wednesday by the Maryland Hospital Association. Vacancy rates for physician assistants, occupational therapists, speech therapists and respiratory therapists soared above 15 percent in 2007. Vacancy rates for respiratory therapists showed the greatest increase at nearly 20 percent, up from about 14 percent in 2006.
