Hospice is not an issue anyone really wants to take a full look at, that is unless you or a family member are impacted.  Budget cuts are already making things difficult in this area, so sad we have to resort to continued legal actions to allow the funds needed to care for seniors who need the care.

imageWe already have children suffering due to budget cuts and yes there is still the fraud issues to audit and those folks need to be out of the system, but in the meantime the system continues to fail those in need.  Granted, the shift has been to move patients to their homes, if this is something that works, but it doesn't work for everyone and there is still a need to provide hospice care.  It comes back around to the same old issue of someone paying the bill.  BD

Sept. 6, 2008 - The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) filed a lawsuit Friday to stop a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) rule that would cut Medicare reimbursement rates for hospice and would irreparably damage hospice programs across the country. The administration proposal, if enacted, would have a direct, negative impact on care at the bedside for the nation's most vulnerable populations, NHPCO contends.

If implemented, such a reduction would cut hospice reimbursement by almost $2.2 billion. Average hospice reimbursement would be reduced from current levels by more than 4 percent, according to a news release from NHPCO.
