This is sad, but the hurricane did such an insurmountable amount of damage, and now there’s not enough money to rebuild and replace and now the number of medical students is also affected as well as the number of charity cases that will be seen, same story, lack of money and funds.  BD

The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston will retain its academic accreditation as a medical school despite the loss of 3,800 jobs, institution leaders said Thursday. But doing so will require the school to continue sending medical students to health facilities elsewhere to gain clinical experience, officials said. Since Hurricane Ike's landfall in September, the school's third- and fourth-year medical students have served their clinical rotations at hospitals across the state.

Callender also said that UTMB will have a more difficult time fulfilling its role of caring for island patients who lack health insurance. Even before Ike's landfall, the institution had been trying to obtain additional funding to help cover the costs of treating the uninsured.

But because of the plan to reduce the number of patient beds at UTMB's John Sealy Hospital from 550 to 200, there will not be enough clinical opportunities for all students.
