Massachusetts Hospitals seemed to have had their share of violence, or at least reported in the news of late. There may be more news forthcoming on this incident that happened at Cape Cod Hospital, where a man died after being kept on life support. He came in to visit his wife who was in the hospital and began acting erratically. Hospital employees were also injured during the scuttle and the man was placed in a chokehold after he left and then returned to the emergency room. During the entire series of event, the man lost consciousness. He never recovered and died after being placed on life support. It appears now legal action could be in process with the wife who is now out of the hospital hiring an attorney. Security in the ER room today it appears should certainly not be overlooked with the state of the economy and more individuals dealing with stressful situations, in and out of the hospital. BD
MASHPEE — More details emerged yesterday about the death of a Mashpee man who died Thursday following an altercation with a Cape Cod Hospital security guard.
Daniel J. Ryan, 35, of Quashnet Woods Drive, had been acting irrationally when he came to visit his wife at the hospital on Oct. 9, according to sources.
Hospital employees called the Barnstable police to help deal with Ryan, according to a prepared statement from Cape Cod Healthcare spokesman David Reilly. The police did not take him into custody, and he was taken to the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation.
At some point, Ryan elected to leave the emergency room, a source said. It's not clear why he left.
A short time later, however, Ryan came back to another section of the hospital. This time his behavior required that he be restrained by hospital staff, who intended to hold him until the police arrived, Reilly said in his prepared statement.
A spokesman for the Ryan family said yesterday they have hired an attorney, Kerry Choi, of Barron & Stadfeld in Boston. Choi did not return a phone call seeking comment yesterday.
Since the incident, Ryan's wife has been released from the hospital, according to sources, but she could not be reached for comment yesterday.
