If you are not familiar with Second Life, it is a growing community on the Internet. You can create an avatar and live life and experience things that you can’t do in regular life, only problem with the site is that some folks get confused over which is real and which is second sometimes, but if treated like a game and an outlet for learning, it can be a good learning experience as well. There are virtual hospitals, doctors, clinics, you name it on the site and the participant chooses where to explore and go. So now we have an insurance company promoting nutrition through the community. Perhaps building a health avatar will help with interacting in the real world, or will the avatar get healthy and the human stay the same? Will we be purchasing virtual insurance in Second Life soon with virtual claims? Wait a minute, we have those now in first life. BD
Health insurer CIGNA is testing the first of a series of planned Second Life virtual health care communities to help members develop behavior changes that improve health.
The first community, being pilot tested, is a “nutrition zone.” It offers a 3-D video game-like environment to enable individuals to interact anonymously with peers. Virtual seminars and interactive games in the zone are designed to teach how to make healthier food choices, manage weight, and understand portion sizes and food labels.
