“The hurdle for most smaller physician practices has been the upfront cost,” said Dan Peterson, who oversees ProHealth Care’s EHR Advantage project.

ProHealth will lease the software for its electronic health records system to doctors whom it doesn’t employ but who practice at its two hospitals in Waukesha County. Other health care systems plan to do the same.

The Waukesha health system now has 50 independent doctors tied into its system. That’s in addition to about 100 doctors it employs who have made the transition to electronic records.

Patients probably have noticed the change: Many of the doctors and nurses employed by ProHealth now carry computer tablets.
