You have to love this! I post about all kinds of technology on this blog and have talked about the Glow Caps project and here’s a few links below. “Seniors are great at setting up networks and internet connections”. Goes back to what I keep saying, we need education and we just don’t get that and have members of Congress that are non participants so it is difficult for them to realize what is happening in the world around or should I say “behind” them. Express Scripts has a pilot starting and I’ll bet if you asked any of our leaders about this, you might get an answer like “huh”? BD
Express Scripts Pilot To Begin Testing the Glow Cap Wireless Pill Container – Wireless Medication Monitoring
This device is also connected to your pharmacy too, so in areas of privacy keep this in mind as those records are bought and sold, so you get a product that helps you remember when to take your pills, but the other side of the coin is that you create more medication data about yourself that can be bought and sold for profit as this information does not fall under HIPAA.
Here are 2 companies that sell prescription data and profiling information.
“HIPAA does not give the Department of Health and Human Services the ability to directly investigate or hold accountable entities, such as pharmacy benefit managers or companies such as Ingenix and Milliman, who are not covered by HIPAA.”
Reminders = Data = Reports
Medical Device = Algorithms = Medical Data = Data Reports = PHR = EHR = _____.
The technology is great if used properly to help us, but we don’t want data and audit trails used to deny service if a pill was missed and risk management, insurance companies as we have seen in the past have denied claims for things like yeast infections, a case of acne not being reported so remember data is very powerful and if given and accessible to those who want it, it could in fact be used against you when you need it the most as they will create a series of reports to show where “you” the patient defaulted. Nothing personal, it’s all about risk management and showing a profit for the shareholders.
Who’s one of the big sponsors of such products, health insurance companies so they can have all the algorithms to “score” and determine what their projected cost is going to be by covering you. We are back to the algorithms once more! BDhttp://vimeo.com/10351159
