It seems like there’s a report of one of these dumping cases every month on average and those are the ones we hear about. Shredders are getting easier to find and if you don’t want to do it yourself, there are services that will do it for you incase of a large amount of patient charts. Not too long ago another medical company paid a fine of $50,000 for dumping medical records in Greensboro. BD
Charlotte, NC -- A viewer tip to WBTV revealed hundreds of medical records discarded at a public county dumping facility in Mecklenburg County.
Two county officials say they will begin an investigation into the dumped records. In an email to WBTV, County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts says she has been trading voicemails with County Manager Harry Jones and are "looking into the clinic that dumped the records checking [to] see what we can legally do."
The records were found within "arms length" at the dumping facility. They contain social security numbers, addresses, and patient consultations with full medical histories. There were also copies of insurance cards, medication prescriptions, and photographs.
