This is all over the news in the last couple of days and other chains, like CVS have been selling alcohol for years. A few years back I spoke to a CVS executive from the east coast and he said he had a learning experience when moving to California to manage stores – alcohol was sold here unlike the stores back east. It all worked but with putting alcohol on the shelves employee training, procedures change a little bit for safety and to ensure minors are not buying.
As we all see the current economic conditions not really shining a big revenue lamp in the near future, all kinds of efforts are being explored to generate more revenue and as this article states, “be a one stop store”, spend your money here instead of over there. It is a state by state issue with getting licenses and some are happy about it and some are challenging the licenses.
So tuck that bottle of wine, beer or whatever you are buying and sit down with your pharmacist and let’s talk about getting you signed up with the YMCA or in our diabetes plan as our records show you may be at risk of developing diabetes – will that pharmacist be talking you out of your alcohol purchase?

One other note to think about, using that discount card that tracks everything you buy, well if you don’t want your booze purchases on there, forego the card for your bottles (grin). Who knows with the analytics going on for the “potential” of developing diabetes, you might be targeted to put that bottle back next if you are filling your prescriptions here…(would the pharmacist really do that to forego a sale)…oh the world of marketing and the sometimes confusing messages that are sent to patients!

If you have a coupon for that bottle too, remember some companies actually can get your Facebook profile that way too, cash talks with no discounts here if you want to remain anonymous in your purchase you could say and keep your store encounters separate here, one visit to buy non prescription items and the other sanctioned just for your health advisories. (grin).
Sure I am having a bit of fun here looking at all sides but is this not what is occurring here and at other stores?
When you walk into a retail drug store are you more valuable as a consumer or a patient…confusing for the patient side of this I think. BD
Walgreens officials said their goal was to offer “one-stop” shopping to their customers and make Walgreens more competitive with similar stores. As part of the agreement, Walgreens cashiers and managers will complete an internal alcohol sales training program.
The council voted 4-1 with Councilman Guy Carrozzo voting against the liquor license request.
