On the south side of the Presidio, near Highway 1, is a tucked-away hospital called the Public Health Service Hospital. The 6-winged Hospital, also known as Building 1801, was built in the 1930s, replacing the old US Marine Hospital, which was built in 1875.The hospital shut down in 1983, with high-end hospital equipment still intact, and was later used as housing for foreign students, animal testing by the defunct Letterman Hospital, and the Defense Language Institute.
