Schools are still being closed for a few days with the flu still making the rounds. The big panic seems to be over, but as the article says, there are still some “hot spots” that are alive and well, or should I say sick. BD
The action around the new H1N1 flu strain seemed to have abated this week. But new hot spots are three schools in the New York City borough of Queens. They’re being closed down for five days amid lots of illness among students. An assistant principal is critically ill.
The CDC has backed off of its recommendation in favor of school closures, noting that the disease has so far turned out to be less severe than initially feared. But the agency also said schools with large clusters of disease that affect the functioning of the school, for instance, should make a decision at the local level.
New York City’s health department decided to recommend the closures in Queens “because there are unusually high levels of flu-like illnesses at three public schools,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a news release.
