Yup, you can’t get away from healthcare anywhere you go today and every year though CES has always had companies in booths with medical devices but the exception this year is that it is getting bigger.  Continua is the wireless alliance for medical devices and put out there announcement this week to look for medical devices with those members of their standards consortium.  Microsoft also joined last year so there’s of members.  The link below actually has a lot of HealthVault PHR connectivity information too.

These folks still have my vote for the most exotic medical devices that records data and dispenses your medication, devices with full on data trails and these you need to be careful with to ensure you know where your data goes and who has access.

Here’s another device from last year and I’m sure they will be around this year too.

Then you may find United Healthcare trying to sell you health insurance and show you how devices can connect and perhaps try to encourage you to sign up with one of the Wellness companies they own.  United already pays pharmacists at Walgreens pay for performance money if they sign you up for one of their many programs to even include the YMCA lopped in there.

Last year United also bought a company in China that is working to promote more Chinese drugs and devices here in the US and globally so not sure if any of those device companies will be represented, may be too soon but be aware this is part of their overall corporation now and I call these items “subsidiary watches”.

Many US companies, such as Medtronic already have strong Chinese ties with facilities and contracts issued to companies in China, and at CES we see product from all over the world so perhaps a bit stronger interest here with subsidiary actions outside the normal realm of just providing health insurance.

Personally I would like to see more collaboration with medical consumer devices as innovation takes care of itself, but collaboration needs a business plan to work to bring companies together.

If folks could drop off the innovation buzz word we hear today and work on better cooperative efforts I think everybody would win as when you see too much with way too many choices that require learning curves, nobody buys.  We just seem to have a world full of magpies that just keep repeating the word innovation when it is already so much alive and well.  BD
