With the new structure they could form additional physician group joint ventures for outpatient surgery and oncology centers, controlled by the hospital group.  As a public hospital group they can’t get the bundled Medicare compensation.  image

The CEO also said they want to market and further their operations in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties so it looks as if there’s a few other reasons stacking up the desire to change to non profit.

Broward Health took the first step toward becoming a nonprofit health system.

The North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners voted Friday to direct Broward Health President and CEO Frank Nask to pursue the conversion of its health care system to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It would still be required to treat indigent patients in its charter. However, as a nonprofit it would not be required to hold its meetings publicly.

“This resolution is a proactive response to impending changes in our operating environment brought about by federal health care reform,” Nask said in a news release.

The system operates four hospitals and 30 community health centers as a public entity under the board of commissioners, which is appointed by the Florida governor. The NBHD levies property taxes for everything in Broward County north of Griffin Road.
