Identity Theft Haven – Used Copiers for Sale with Data Loaded Hard Drives and Information Galore for the Taking!

<p><strong>Ok paper folks, so you thought scanning a piece of paper and making a copy was safe, well think again</strong> as depending on the type of copier you have each scan might<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2zms2iOVjI/AAAAAAAAcYs/K9wwKDOrGMM/s1600-h/image%5B30%5D.png"><img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="131" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2zmtK-t0wI/AAAAAAAAcYw/K8gPvhAV1tk/image_thumb%5B17%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: 0px" title="image" width="140" /></a> be stored on a drive.  In this article <strong>the news agency saw a medical record that showed someone’s HIV file.</strong>  Copiers are a major loophole for privacy.  Wiping the drive or getting a sledgehammer would fix the problem, but unlike computers many do not even think about the drive in a copier.     </p> <p><strong>You just power up the machine and there’s a list of past print jobs, to reference and re-print if you want.</strong>  If you are getting a new copier this might be something to think about if you are trading it in, ask the company if they are going to wipe the drive before trading in for a new one.  You see the memory on copy machines all the time for reference.  The machines being discussed are the all in one machines that fax, scan print and some can email, so if they can do all of that, there’s a drive in there to create memory. </p> <p>They called the office called Caroline Kennedy as they found records with her phone number and other information.  The phone number was correct.  <strong>Now if you in a medical practice, think twice about trading in that machine by all means!</strong>    Have you called a company asking for your information to be sent to you via fax, well like me internet faxing holds the image, all big companies do that.  If you look and see an IP address, the individual talking in the video tells you it has not been cleared.  Remember so many of the new copiers go right on a network and function with an address, just like a computer.  </p> <p>All you do is connect a computer to the hard drive in the machine and you have all the documents.  <strong><a href="http://cbs13.com/local/tony.lopez.Keeping.2.1471827.html">Use the link and watch this video.</a></strong>  There are no laws or regulations on how to clean the hard drives.  In the video they show documents clearly marked “confidential” and some have signatures high ranking individuals at places like Google, etc. so nobody seems to be safe here, as <strong>even if it was not you who did the copying,</strong> but rather let’s <strong>say an insurance company sending <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2zmt_N5gRI/AAAAAAAAcY0/bzPhRXdCli4/s1600-h/image%5B31%5D.png"><img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="140" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2zmuXUNx-I/AAAAAAAAcY4/-a7Q8U0TXxs/image_thumb%5B18%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: 0px" title="image" width="204" /></a>information to a pharmacy benefit manager as an example, or that pharmacy benefit manager doing the same, or a retail pharmacy faxing prescription confirmations, </strong>and then later getting rid of the machines for a newer model with a full drive, up to 25,000 documents that could be there.  Those were your records sent, but you were not involved in the transmittal in any shape or form, so who knows what could be found!  </p> <p><u><strong>What causes this, “tech denial” and lack of awareness!</strong></u>  Now some folks have woken up to this fact but there are so many that have no clue, so it’s a haven for identity theft.  Just think of a hospital dumping a copy machine without wiping a drive.  Copier dealers don’t necessarily want to discuss this as it involves more cost for them to educate customers on wiping drives or having to provide that service.  <strong>Gee, all about money and making a buck standing in the way again.</strong> <strong> </strong></p> <p><strong>Ok, this is a privacy issue, but who’s going to police it, HIPAA for the medical side with perhaps some new regulations, but this goes way beyond just medical so like everything else today we have an issue that require more than one agency to work together, something that has been such a chore for so many today it seems.  BD  </strong> </p> <blockquote> <p>SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Speech Recognition – Have a Computer Using Vista? Go Find It in the Control Panel and Try It

<p>I have been working on a few computers here lately and this conversation came up again as to wanting to use Speech Recognition and I can’t begin to count the number of times I tell people if you have Windows Vista, it’s included in the operating system, just go set it up and try it out.  For some strange reason this seems to be one of the best kept secrets that nobody knows about!  How long has Vista been out?  It’s been there that long.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2xj42KtU1I/AAAAAAAAcYU/HRJbrb3w30M/s1600-h/image%5B3%5D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="195" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2xj5UC6H-I/AAAAAAAAcYY/Jvpsj9TNZ1E/image_thumb%5B1%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="image" width="362" /></a> </p> <p>I post quite a bit here about Nuance for healthcare too which is also great and is advanced with additional features and integrates with many medical records systems, but gee if you have a computer at home and want to try it out, especially if you don’t type too well, what do you have to lose?   You can also read more here at the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/windowsvista/speech.aspx">Microsoft website.</a>   The training is not that long as the computer needs to get used to your voice.  If you have XP, forget it as the upgrades and performance are significant with Vista.  It loads this nice small interface here where you can turn it off and on, and close it when you are done.  When I am not dictating I turn it off to save resources.  </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2xj50zLTbI/AAAAAAAAcYc/Yd4M7oeD_P0/s1600-h/image%5B6%5D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="96" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2xj6IsyMRI/AAAAAAAAcYg/E-qxVsSm8Q0/image_thumb%5B2%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="image" width="240" /></a> </p> <p>One thing to be aware of if you have a desktop, you may need to get a microphone, but if <strong>you are using a notebook or tablet, most of those have built in microphones so go for it.</strong>  The microphones are not all created equal though so you still may want to get a headset.  There’s even one blue tooth microphone I saw recently that states it will work, so we are getting this capability on a wireless note now.  <strong>My tablet has dual array microphones, which means it is high powered and I do not need a headset in a fairly quiet area.   I walk around with the tablet in the room using Skype too.</strong>  It just has to be near me.</p> <p><strong>Windows Speech recognition has a dictionary too.</strong>  Back in September of 2008 I spoke to a Windows Users group, seniors, and they all wanted to know how to use this and if you read the post one other feature that has been in Windows for a long time is the Narrator.  The computer reads back to you through the computer voice.  </p> <h4><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2008/09/microsoft-speech-recognition.html"><font size="2">Microsoft Speech Recognition Presentation - Computer Friends at the Oasis - Newport Beach, CA</font></a></h4> <p><img border="0" height="183" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/DucknetServices/SMlpTsZlDgI/AAAAAAAAI6o/ZKLnzKO-rN4/image[5].png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; CSI Television Shows are Focusing on the Needs for Healthcare Reform

<p>Even if you are not reading a lot of news today or watching on television, when you go to watch some of the leading CSI shows, the crimes they are solving are revolving around healthcare, all fiction of course, but some pretty good writers here emphasizing the need for change.</p> <p>Here’s a couple prior posts I had that were worth another mention as the anger and frustration continues to boil over the lack of timing and overall carrying for your fellow man and woman.  The CSI Miami clip below starts out with the girlfriend of the boss getting a big bonus, jewelry and the man who has worked for him for years<img align="right" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/SwxqBxTKxwI/AAAAAAAAbHk/I0IaqvGjtQw/image9[2].png?imgmax=800" style="border-right-width: 0px; Genes Help Determine How An Individual Benefits from Exercise

<p> We all know that exercise is good for us, but how it compares, let’s say you have 2 individuals doing the same amount, types, etc. of exercise.  From an appearance side of things I used to encounter that at the gym and years ago I used to say it was because of the genes.  You could see on individual just buffed and the next person right around the same age, weight, etc. not get the same results.  <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2veIg7_nlI/AAAAAAAAcYM/jBqzJzkB2_M/s1600-h/image%5B4%5D.png"><img align="right" alt="image" border="0" height="163" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/S2veI8cGQOI/AAAAAAAAcYQ/i8cNvYWfSs8/image_thumb%5B2%5D.png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="image" width="140" /></a> </p> <p>Perhaps this is the next step to getting the right exercise, a genomically based exercise routine?  We are not going to have much guess work at all soon it appears, but the studies here are not done yet and more information needs to follow.  When we are all sequenced someday, we can look forward to personalized workouts, we have those now, but they too could become scientific and<strong> we may have several treadmills to choose from, based on which one meets our DNA criteria</strong> for the best results (grin). <p> We hear a lot about patients and doctors using video conferencing and here’s an example in the hospital on how Partners Healthcare doctors have the ability to connect from home.  The unit is right at the bedside, next to the patient, so if they need to have a visual look, they can via video.  The attending physician gets to be included too, so everybody is in the same loop. When they are needed for a consultation they videoconference in from home to a portable telemedicine station positioned at the patient's bedside. The attending physician can then see the patient, talk with clinicians on-site, personally evaluate the child's condition and make treatment decisions. Low Cost or Close to No Cost Diagnosis Using Cheap Paper - TED

<p>George Whitesides, the Chemist from Harvard has a profile that can be <a href="http://www.ted.com/speakers/george_whitesides.html">read here.</a>  He is discussing using paper for more diagnostic tests.  There’s a special printer that works with the paper to create the objects.  He touches on the subject we all love to hate or hate to love, compliance. Zeltiq™ System That Sucks, Freezes And Eventually Kills the Fat Cells In Your Body – Non-invasive Procedure

Health Net Posts 4th Quarter and Annual Loss And Giving Many Insured Free Credit Services

<p>The security breach this year was probably something I am guessing they can wish did not happen, nobody wants that and now the Attorney General of Connecticut is suing over the issue.  Where’s the money coming from since they too are losing individual and employer accounts, Medicare Advantage policies, like the rest of them, making money from the Government.  </p> <h4><a href="http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2010/01/health-net-sued-by-connecticut-attorney.html"><font size="2">Health Net Sued By Connecticut Attorney General – Someone’s Enforcing HIPAA For A Change</font></a></h4> <p>The big loss of business this year for HealthNet was the <strong>Tri-Care contract for the northeast, which was lost to Aetna,</strong> but that story is not over yet either as <img align="right" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_v3zjJigoAPE/SwVsLwEF4TI/AAAAAAAAbDE/5-cyT5Yq8Cg/image_thumb[1].png?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-right: 0px" />HealthNet protested, and <strong>now the GAO says it looks like Aetna cheated</strong> with a conflict of interest on their bid.  In the meantime after the contract was first announced and with a projected loss of a substantial amount of business,<strong> HealthNet sold their northeast business to United Healthcare, so those lucky folks have one less insurance carrier to choose</strong> from, a big issue with lack of competition.  For now it looks like they are still in limbo on the Tri-Care situation but watching how fast they sold off the northeast business after the initial announcement maybe some what tells the story of a big source of revenue, again the Government.  It seems like all these carriers are banking on the government so gee, what’s the real danger of a public plan we could see with some transparency at this point?  BD  </p> <p>HealthNet hung on to that corrupted Ingenix data base for calculating out of network charges until this summer so I don’t know where they stand as far as lawsuits but in 2008 they reached an agreement to pay 14.5% above the Ingenix rates that were shown for reimbursing patients and doctors with class action lawsuits filed against them.  </p> <blockquote> <p>Health Net Inc. (HNT) swung to a fourth-quarter loss as enrollments continued to decline. FDA Recalls Synthes Vertebral Implant and Issues 2 Warnings to Other Companies And Still No System To Intellectually Handle the Process

<p>Ok I’m going to take the opportunity to once more mention how recalls could be handled.  Hospitals have registries of products but sometimes things can and do get missed, and people die being implanted with devices that were not pulled and used by mistake.  Actually I have a little campaign going on here to use Tags to solve this issue.  I even have a link at the top of this site that goes into a lot of detail here. Hartford Free Medical Clinic Saw Over 1000 Patients Today – Congress Still Oblivious to the Urgency of Reform

<p>Back in January I had posted to get the word out to find volunteers. Anthem Blue Cross Joins CaliforniaChoice Small Group Health Insurance Exchange

RitePen – Inking Within an EHR on a Tablet PC – Runs from Citrix Server Too

Wireless Biometric Monitoring Device Gets Sticky – It Wants to Be Attached Near the Heart of the Issue

Oprah Show To Focus on Diabetes This Week

FDA To Review Teva Biosimilar of Amgen's Neupogen – Authority to Approve? Only Our Congress Knows
