As the heart business slows, new jobs to be added to the "brain" division...such as I have reported in the recent past and located in the archives of the site, devices that send information to computers as well as treatment plans...BD

Medtronic said today it’s cutting 1,100 jobs. The news comes as no surprise, given the long-term doldrums in the market for implantable cardioverter defibrillators, expensive devices that monitor the heart and deliver a restorative shock if it falls into an abnormal rhythm.

Medtronic is the biggest fish in the ICD pond (see chart, taken from this WSJ story), and the segment makes up the largest share of the company’s revenues.  Medtronic employs nearly 40,000 people total and plans to continue adding jobs in some areas, including devices with wires implanted in the brain to treat disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, DJ says.
