Every time I get the chance I liked to mention what Remote Area Medical is doing. They have had two free clinics in the Los Angeles area and have helped some really needy people and these are not just the unemployed either. There are people who are working that need care and don’t have insurance or enough insurance.
This mission to New Orleans is dedicated around the BO oil spill and by the time they get there around the end of August I’m sure they will have their work cut out for them. It is no surprise that Stan Brock received the Inamori Ethics Prize last year. He joins Dr. Francis S. Collins, previous leader of the Human Genome Project, and The Honorable Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights, as winners of the prize.
What is nice about the clinic in New Orleans is that doctors from out of state can volunteer, a problem we had here in California as laws prohibited doctors from coming in to donate time from other states. Also mentioned on their main web page is a free clinic coming up in Oklahoma City on July 9-11, 2010.

Remote Area Medical was originally set up to help other developing countries but lately a great deal of their work has been in the United States, we are unfortunately the “developing county” when it comes to providing healthcare. BD
