PHYSIO-CONTROL INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION OFLIFENET SYSTEM

REDMOND, Wash. – November 15, 2010 – Physio-Control, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medtronic, Inc., (NYSE: MDT), announced today it has received 510(k)image clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market LIFENET System 5.0 within the United States. LIFENET 5.0 is the latest version of Physio-Control’s web-based data network, providing emergency medical services (EMS) and hospital care teams with a suite of innovative new tools and capabilities to help improve patient outcomes, trim operational costs, and streamline equipment management.

The 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care emphasize the importance of a well organized approach to ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care to activate rapid access to reperfusion therapy.  The LIFENET System has proven to be a key element of regional systems of care for patients experiencing a STEMI. Physio-Control has continued to add new, innovative functionality to the LIFENET System by providing tools to help teams work more efficiently. image

New features available in LIFENET 5.0 include:

  • LIFENET Consult – iPhone application allows physicians to perform rapid consults and provides decision support remotely to EMS and hospital care teams. The LIFENET Consult app is available for download from the iPhone App Store.
  • LIFENET OnePush – Automated protocol activation, notifies necessary caregivers and allows hospital teams more time to prepare for incoming patients.
  • LIFENET ePCR Delivery – Enables efficient and secure remote delivery of electronic patient care records (ePCR) to hospital printers or electronic medical record systems.
  • LIFENET Asset –Provides LIFEPAK device overview and management across entire fleet including automated alerts on device status, usage information, management of setup options and software updates.
  • Enhanced data integration – Enables EMS and hospitals to capture more patient data and combine it for a more-complete view of the patient.

“LIFENET has completely revolutionized our ability to get patients to our cardiac cath lab rapidly and efficiently,” said Jeffrey Lubin, MD, MPH, FACEP, Director, EMS and Critical Care Transport, University Hospitals Case Medical Center. “Once the paramedics send the prehospital ECG to us, an emergency physician can quickly confirm the patient is having a STEMI and activate the lab. In many cases, cath lab personnel have actually met the EMS crew when they arrived in the ER and escorted them directly upstairs with the patient still on the stretcher.”

Devices, such as monitors/defibrillators, are an essential investment for both EMS organizations and hospitals, and their efficient use directly impacts the success of patient care. The ability to effectively manage these devices is critical to ensuring they perform as intended and are ready when needed. The new LIFENET Asset feature facilitates device management utilizing a simple dashboard view, making it easy to track and monitor equipment status – from location, to battery life, to usage, to device setup and updates.image

“LIFENET 5.0 expands on our vision of a completely connected product line, allowing for easy sharing of clinical data as well as simplifying our customers' operations”, said Brian Webster, president, Physio-Control, Inc. “The significant investments we have made in the LIFENET network has built a solid infrastructure for sharing important data that also serves as a ‘backbone’ for providing future capabilities to customers.”

LIFENET 5.0 will be available to U.S. customers in December 2010. LIFENET System 5.0 is being exhibited publicly for the first time at two cardiovascular conferences – American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2010 (Chicago, November 14-16) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update 2010 (San Diego, December 8-10). LIFENET 5.0 is approved to market in the European Union and in Canada. Physio-Control has also announced customer availability to upgrade to LIFENET 5.0 in the United Kingdom and Canada. PHYSIO-CONTROL AND AIRSTRIP TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO DELIVER INTEGRATED MOBILE SOLUTIONS

SAN ANTONIO and REDMOND, Wash. – November 15, 2010 – Innovative new mobile cardiac monitoring solutions are on the horizon. At the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2010, AirStrip Technologies, a pioneer in mobile medical software applications and Physio-Control, Inc., the world leader in emergency medical solutions, announced a joint partnership to deliver integrated lifesaving mobile solutions. Initially, the partnership will integrate AirStrip’s remote patient monitoring applications with Physio-Control’s patient data transmission network, mobilizing critical information, resulting in better-informed clinical decision making and improved patient outcomes.

The fully-integrated solution will leverage the capabilities of AirStrip CARDIOLOGYTM, a solution allowing clinicians to dynamically view a patient’s ECG history, and Physio-Control’s LIFENET® System, a web-based data transmission network that provides healthcare organizations with tools to help them improve operational efficiency and quality of care.

Used together, AirStrip CARDIOLOGY and the LIFENET System allow for unprecedented collaboration between emergency medical services (EMS), emergency department (ED), and cardiology teams, especially when transporting patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

AirStrip CARDIOLOGY, deployed as a native application on smartphones imageand tablet devices, will receive 12-lead ECG waveforms, vital signs and other data transmitted wirelessly from EMS crews’ LIFEPAK® 12 defibrillator/monitors and 15 monitor/defibrillators in the field via the LIFENET System. Clinicians can then access the data from anywhere in the hospital and review and respond to it on their iPhone® with LIFENET Consult, a new mobile application available in the newly-released LIFENET System 5.0. In addition, clinicians who are AirStrip users will have advanced viewing capabilities, with high fidelity waveform analysis, displaying 12-lead ECG reports with sharp resolution and providing dynamic review tools such as calipers, 12-lead ECG scrolling, cine loop views of each lead, and other features and functionalities not yet seen in the EMS environment for 12-lead ECG review and patient management.

The integrated solution empowers clinicians to communicate immediately with the EMS crew to provide the clinical assistance needed to properly care for the patient while en route, direct them to the appropriate care facility and prepare for the arrival of the patient accordingly. With the integrated solution, these capabilities are available to clinicians anytime, anywhere on their smartphone or tablet device.

Airstrip

“AirStrip is focused on improving patient safety and improving clinical outcomes through the use of mobility by delivering meaningful, visual data to clinical decision makers regardless of physical location,” said Cameron Powell, M.D. and president, AirStrip Technologies, Inc.  “Our partnership with Physio-Control extends the reach of our Cardiology solution to link those critical patients who have not yet arrived at the Emergency Department with the clinicians who need to make decisions fast. In the world of cardiology, time is muscle. The partnership between AirStrip and Physio-Control is focused on shortening that time so that the right decisions can be made faster and more reliably in these acute situations.”

“With complementary solutions in the marketplace, our partnership with AirStrip takes EMS-hospital coordination to a whole new level,” said Brian Webster, president, Physio-Control, Inc. “I expect this collaboration will lead to new and innovative ways to display patient information in the future, beyond 12-lead ECGs and other vital signs.”

A free demonstration version of the AirStrip Patient Monitoring application is now available for download in Apple’s App Store. The free demonstration version of the AirStrip Cardiology application is scheduled to be available by early December with a fully functional version expected to be available in the first half of 2011.
